Edit Cast Cast overview, first billed only: Gerard Butler George Jessica Biel Stacie Noah Lomax Lewis Dennis Quaid Carl Uma Thurman Halberstam meticulously details every step of Jordan's career from his backyard battles with his brother to his final quest for a championship.

The reporting is incredible and the book is loaded with anecdotes from MJ's friends, competitors, and business partners. The author plays with time to convey Jordan's impact on the sport and American society at his apex, while simult I dove into this after the league's premier historian, Bill Simmons, called this the best Jordan book that's been written.

The author plays with time to convey Jordan's impact on the sport and American society at his apex, while simultaneously providing context on how near pyschopathic determination fueled his journey to get there.

You're left feeling that the show Jordan put on for us was equal parts magic and grit. I'd like to explore similar books for Kareem and LeBron but I finished this book feeling more strongly than ever that Jordan is the G.

If you are a basketball fan, you HAVE to read this book. If you simply enjoy sports, you should definitely read this book.

If you are none of the above, I would say to you: read this book. David Halberstam's ability to get you hooked is amazing. His writing is simple while managing to be so rich on vocabulary and figures of speech.

That's what struck me the most, how articulate, smooth, clean and simple his writing is. True writing skills of one of the greatest journalists ever.

Even for a huge MJ fan like me, every story told on this book had a new detail that I've never read or knew before. Truly a pleasant read, I'll definitely be looking for other books from him.

Aug 25, James Gisler rated it it was ok. It felt like many of the same stories, but told poorly in comparison. It also seemed to float around a bit without much connection.

It felt kind of like a fan boy account trying to sound like a sportswriter. Sep 07, Robert rated it really liked it. An incredible character study that highlights why Michael Jordan was so special.

Having already read the Lazenby biography of Jordan probably made me downgrade this book one star. There wasn't much new for me about Jordan in this book, but lots of new stuff about the different persons moving in and out of Jordan's life.

The problem is that the supporting cast isn Having already read the Lazenby biography of Jordan probably made me downgrade this book one star.

The problem is that the supporting cast isn't as interesting as the main figure, which makes me prefer the Lazenby book. Still an okay read and it got a bit better towards the end.

Would probably have given it 3. Michael Jordan may be one of the, if not the, greatest basketball players of all time and in this book, Halberstam brings even casual fans and perhaps most of all them given some or even many of the individual stories may be known to regular basketball followers into the world of Jordan and the Bulls and by extension the growth of the NBA.

Dec 27, Ben rated it really liked it. David Halberstam is to writing sports books the way Robert Caro is to biographies.

He was just so much better at it that it almost doesn't seem fair when others attempt it. What makes Halberstam's work so good is that he doesn't just profile one subject--Michael Jordan--rather he presents a story of the late s and s NBA.

This includes whole chapters that are about the rise of Nike, David Falk, the David Halberstam is to writing sports books the way Robert Caro is to biographies.

This includes whole chapters that are about the rise of Nike, David Falk, the Celtics, and a host of other subjects that a normal biography would not spend much time explaining or thinking about.

The result is that Michael Jordan becomes interesting context to which you can view the rest of what's going on in basketball over a roughly 20 year period.

The only other caveat on this book is that if you already read the recent biography of Jordan that came out in the last year or two you may find some of these parts repetitive.

Mar 20, janet rated it really liked it Recommends it for: basketball fanatics. This book is very dense and detailed, probably geared toward basketball fanatics and Jordan-o-philes rather than the casual b-ball watcher like myself.

But it does a great job describing the history of the modern NBA and, of course, the role Michael Jordan played in shaping it.

Halberstam describes in-depth every person who possibly had an impact on Jordan. Although Halberstam sometimes goes on too much about peripheral characters, I a This book is very dense and detailed, probably geared toward basketball fanatics and Jordan-o-philes rather than the casual b-ball watcher like myself.

Although Halberstam sometimes goes on too much about peripheral characters, I appreciated Halberstam's point that no matter how naturally physically gifted Jordan was, it was the people around him his college coach, parents, teammates that helped make him into the greatest b-ball player of all time.

Aug 30, Vitalijus Sostak rated it really liked it. I'm not a basketball fan in any way in fact, not a sports guy at all , but reading about Michael Jeffrey Jordan achievements one cannot help but to be impressed.

This book is a goldmine for basketball aficionados - so many details about players, coaches, games, drafts, training regimes etc.

Otherwise, it's a beautiful Jordan's biography that mainly focuses on his NBA years. Intense, motivating reading.

May 03, Riley rated it really liked it. View 1 comment. When he was 12, he pitched for Wilmington in the eastern regional little league championship game.

The winner would go to the Little League World Series. He pitched a two hitter that day but his team lost Krauss was smart, he had a good eye, and he was unbelievably hard-working, and in every conceivable way he had beaten the odds and becoming a first rank NBA executive.

Instead he often seemed to create problems. That was no small thing. His ability to convert Jordan into a believer in the triple-post offense, and thus into becoming a teammate who shared the ball more readily, was probably his greatest success.

His basketball world was, if anything, an extension of his own religiosity. Lateness was not tolerated.

Dean Smith urged Jordan to go pro after his junior year; it took a summer of urging, possibly because Michael thought there was the unfinished business of bringing back another title.

Everyone in the NBA in those days, it seemed, wanted a big man… the NBA mythology at that point was that shooting guards could not lift a poor team.

A great shooting guard was thought as the final piece that completed a championship team, not the centerpiece of one. And its sports.

The deal with Jordan changed that—a basketball player, a member of a team, could also be a star. He had answered that they were very similar, but that Smith employed the four-corner offense, and Knight employed four-letter words.

Jordan seemed to get stronger! Each shot was launched quite deliberately from farther out, first twenty feet then twenty-two, them twenty-four, then twenty-six, and then thirty-two feet.

He hit every one. The practice was winding down, the score was close, and with time for only one more play Bird took the ball up court.

As he reached the half court line… Bird launched the ball from just inside the front court and it went in. In one game Jordan, scored 63 points, a playoff record, but Jordan only remembers it as a game they lost.

The focus is Jordan as man and athlete, not actor, using his charm and facial expressions. We thought the offer was a prank at first.

He treated them with respect, and he treated them as individuals, not setting conditions that they would not obey, such as bed checks and curfews.

He sends the idiosyncrasies of each player and tried, within the limits allowed to a coach, to adjust to them… he did not think or talk like other coaches, and it was harder for the players to figure him out.

He did not come at them with his rules and his need for authority. Instead, he was open, he listened, he treated them with dignity, and he did not put his authority on the line all the time as too many coaches, struggling to make a name, do.

He tried to understand their purposes and see if he could create a shared purpose. He had learned from Red Holtzman that this was where the players should be allowed to make mistakes and where a coach could criticize them without any fear that his words would go outside the family.

Everyone on the team would have to shoot well, and the ball would move quickly. Pippen was admitted onto his college basketball team on a favor, quickly excelled and went from being a secret pick to a sought after one.

As sometimes happens, the baggage men came on the plane after they pulled into the terminal because they knew Jordan was onboard and they wanted to meet him, shake his hand, and perhaps get his autograph.

So Pfeil made his way to the baggage conveyor, and there he found his team gathered around the mouth of it. Soon, the other players were putting their hundred dollar bills alongside it.

The bet was on whose baggage would come out first, and of course it was Jordan. Jackson grew up in a strict home no TV, dancing, etc.

He became a man who championed individuality and a believer and a mixture of Christianity, Buddhism, and Native American beliefs.

They had coached together in the summer league one season, and Jackson had become its advocate. He thought the constant movement and the clearly assigned roles that demanded that players cut from one point to another suited the nature of the talent he now had.

He also thought it would make Michael Jordan a more complete offensive threat… it was not an easy offense to learn, and over the years, while certain players took to it naturally, it was bewildering to others, who never managed to grasp the nature of the movement, which was at once both ordained and yet voluntary.

The problem would be selling it to Jordan, and that process was to take much of the next two seasons. Jordan was 7 years into his NBA career.

The Dream Team completely dominated. The biggest challenge being the famed Monte Carlo scrimmage when the Dream Team played one another and it got heated.

He was betting on golf matches and individual holes and became a target for hustlers, some of whom had shady or violent ties.

His slightest flaws were now magnified for the rest of the world. Jordan had already seemed as though the game was now just a job and had been talking baseball, but more so after the death of his father.

Batted just over. Lost in second round to Orlando magic and Grant. Felt all the Bulls needed was a power forward. The Bulls get Rodman, who was quiet and reserved out of the spotlight, wild in the spotlight--a change he made to stick out in the league and earn a bigger paycheck--and a workhorse on the court.

They swept Orlando in the playoffs and won the finals against the Seattle Supersonics. Game five. The deathly ill game. Has a fist fight with Kerr. No problems with Kerr after that.

Matured on his treatment of Pippen, Calling him the best on the team. Jordan carried the offense but was getting tired.

Without taking a timeout, he runs the clock down, fakes a drive on Bryon Russell and shoots with eight seconds left.
